The Luhuitou Scenic Area is located on the southwestern tip of Sanya City, on the Luhuitou Peninsula. It consists of five mountains, with the highest peak reaching an elevation of 181 meters. The park is surrounded by the sea on three sides, with one side adjacent to the city of Sanya, making it an ideal spot for panoramic views of Sanya, as well as for watching sunrises and sunsets. In 1994, the Luhuitou Scenic Area was designated as a scenic area, and in 2017, it was awarded the National 4A Tourist Scenic Area title.
The Legend of the Deer Turning Back: A Love Story by the South Sea
There is a legend about a young hunter from the Li ethnic group, who wore a red headband and carried a bow and arrow. He chased a mountain deer from the depths of Hainan Island’s Wuzhi Mountain, passing through ninety-nine mountains and ninety-nine rivers, until he reached the shores of the South Sea. At the foot of a cliff atop a mountain peak, the deer had nowhere to escape. Just as the young hunter drew his bow and aimed his arrow, a flash of light suddenly appeared, and smoke rose into the air. The deer turned around and transformed into a beautiful Li ethnic girl. The two fell in love and became a devoted couple. This mountain was subsequently named “Luhuitou” (Deer Turning Back), becoming a place of love and vows for young couples.
Main Attraction: The Luhuitou Sculpture
“Do not say the five rams are the best of Guangdong, their elegance cannot compare to that of Luhuitou.” The Luhuitou sculpture is the work of renowned Chinese sculptor Lin Yuhui. The statue stands 15 meters tall, 10 meters long, and 9 meters wide, and was carved from over 170 pieces of marble over a period of five years. This sculpture is also the reason why Sanya is known as the “Deer City.” Other notable sculptures by Lin include the Nanjing Yuhuatai sculpture, the Sanya Xiaodongtian sculpture, and the Guangzhou Five Rams sculpture.
The Mountain of Love: A Cultural Landmark of Romance
The Luhuitou Scenic Area is also home to a collection of romantic cultural landmarks, including the “Love” character stone inscriptions, “Eternal Union,” “Oaths by the Sea and Mountains,” “Heart Lock,” “Wishing Tree,” “Immortal Deer Tree,” “Stone that Cannot Decay,” and “Mountain Vows Monument.” These features highlight the theme of love, with every mountain filled with affection, every sight full of love, and every heart touched by emotion. The annual Tianya Haijiao International Wedding Festival, held every November, draws couples from both domestic and international locations, who come here to pledge their love, pray for lifelong happiness, and celebrate eternal love.
