Sumtseling Monastery is also known as Guihua Monastery. It is a large Tibetan Buddhist temple in Yunnan and the center of the Gelugpa sect in Sichuan and Yunnan. Songtseling Monastery is built on the mountain and looks a bit like the Potala Palace in Lhasa. It is known as the “Little Potala Palace” because of its large scale. In addition, the religious instruments and precious cultural relics in the temple are also worth seeing.
Songzanlin Temple is located in the mountains, and its appearance is like a mysterious ancient castle; the vermilion eaves, crescent-colored walls, and golden roofs emit dazzling colors under the sun, showing the artistic characteristics of the Tibetan people.
The architectural style of Songzanlin Temple imitates the Potala Palace in Tibet, and it is stacked up along the mountain. There are elliptical walls around it, and the two main halls are majestic.
There is also an intriguing story about Songzanlin Temple.
It is said that when the Fifth Dalai Lama was selecting the site for Songzanlin Monastery, he asked the gods for divination, and the fortune read: “A clear spring appears in the deep woods, and golden sparrows fall from the sky and play in it.” Now, there are indeed clear springs in Songzanlin Monastery all year round, and a pair of golden sparrows enter and leave the monastery, which is very magical.
Where did this pair of golden sparrows come from? Where is the clear spring located?
The answer is a lake called “Lamyangcuo” in front of the mountain gate of Songzanlin Monastery. “Lamyangcuo” means “Holy Mother Soul Lake” in Tibetan. Although the area is not large, it is full of vitality. All year round, various water birds will come here to live, including precious birds such as black-necked cranes and red-crested ducks.
