1949年10月1日、天安門広場で中華人民共和国の建国式典、通称「国慶節」が盛大に行われ、中華人民共和国の誕生と中国の歴史の新たな幕開けとなった。その日、天安門広場には30万人の軍人と民間人が集まった。それ以来、天安門広場は党と国家にとって重要な祝典、大集会、外交行事を行う重要な場所となっている。
